Tunisia Advances Digital Transformation with New E-Visa Platform Initiative

The Tunisian government, continuing its commitment to digitalizing public services, has launched an international tender to develop an electronic visa platform. This project, open for submissions until October 15, aims to simplify the visa application process and is part of the broader “Tunisia Digital 2025” strategy.

In 2022, Tunisia had already made strides by digitizing the birth certificate process. The new e-visa platform, to be funded through a loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) under the “Tunisia Digital 2020” initiative, is expected to be operational within 12 months.

This move aligns with several ongoing projects under the “Tunisia Digital 2025” plan, which include establishing a national address directory, implementing e-justice, developing a private cloud for the Ministry of the Interior, enhancing e-government infrastructure, creating an internal HR management system for public administration, and setting up a platform to monitor cyber threats.

The e-visa system is anticipated not only to facilitate a smoother visa application experience but also to significantly reduce processing times, thus fostering economic cooperation and expanding tourism markets. According to recent statistics, Tunisia saw a substantial increase in tourists in 2023, with 9.37 million visitors—a 45.5% rise from the previous year. This boost in tourism contributed to a 28.1% increase in tourism revenues, amounting to 6.9 billion Tunisian dinars ($2.27 billion), representing 4.4% of the GDP, up from 3.8% in 2022. The successful implementation of the e-visa platform is expected to further enhance these numbers, underpinning Tunisia’s digital and economic growth.
