The Digital Co-operation Organisation (DCO) has introduced a transformative tool, the Digital Economy Navigator (DEN), aimed at helping countries like Bahrain navigate the complexities of the digital economy. Launched at the SDG Digital 2024 conference, the DEN provides a comprehensive framework for assessing digital maturity, offering valuable insights into national strengths, weaknesses, and growth areas.
Employing an extensive dataset, the DEN evaluates the digital performance of 50 countries, including DCO member states, across various dimensions such as infrastructure, skills, and regulation. This evaluation gives a complete picture of a country’s digital capabilities through three main dimensions: Digital Enablers, Digital Business, and Digital Society. These are broken down into 10 pillars, which are further distilled from 102 indicators sourced from reputable data and a survey involving over 27,000 participants globally.
In particular, Bahrain has shown promising progress in the global digital sphere. The nation has achieved a high score in Digital Infrastructure due to its accessible and affordable broadband. Its efforts in digital education have earned a solid score in Digital Capabilities, while its regulatory environment supportive of digital businesses has also been notably scored.
However, opportunities for improvement remain, especially in Digital Innovation where Bahrain can better its environment to foster new digital products and services, enhancing its economic growth potential.
The DEN not only aids policymakers, businesses, and investors in identifying areas for strategic enhancement but also positions Bahrain on a path of sustained digital development. The comprehensive assessment outlines clear strategies for future growth, making it a crucial tool for digital economy advancement.
Furthermore, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is recognized for its advancements in digital work and training, efforts to bridge gender gaps in digital access, and positive impacts in health and education sectors.
Deemah AlYahya, secretary-general of the DCO, emphasized the tool’s role in boosting accessibility, sustainability, and economic prosperity. “The Digital Economy Navigator is pivotal in supporting evidence-based policy-making and impactful digital outcomes, ensuring countries not only keep pace but lead in the digital era,” she stated.
