Bahrain begins construction of 100MW Al Dur solar PV project

MANAMA: The government of Bahrain has launched construction of a 100MW solar photovoltaic power plant in the Al Dur area of the Southern Governorate, marking a major step in the Kingdom’s energy transition strategy. The project is being developed by the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) and is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of next year.

The Al Dur solar facility will span two adjacent sites covering approximately 830,000 square metres and will feature around 135,000 solar panels. Construction is expected to take about 18 months from the date of contract award. Once completed, the plant will be connected to the national electricity grid through the 66/11kV Al Dur BSP substation.

Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Khalid said the project reflects Bahrain’s shift towards large-scale, centralised renewable energy generation capable of supplying meaningful capacity to meet future electricity demand. He noted that integrating solar power into the national grid would help diversify energy sources, enhance grid resilience, and generate long-term environmental and economic benefits.

The project aligns with Bahrain’s Government Programme 2023–2026 and supports national targets to increase the share of renewable energy in the power mix to 20 per cent by 2035. Authorities described the Al Dur development as a cornerstone initiative in strengthening the country’s renewable energy infrastructure and advancing sustainable power generation.
