Jordan Launches €1.83m ‘ReTour’ Project to Strengthen Tourism SMEs Across the Mediterranean

AMMAN — A new cross-border initiative worth €1.83 million has been launched to enhance the sustainability, adaptability, and digital readiness of tourism small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the Mediterranean region.

The project, titled “ReTour: Enhancing the Resilience of Small and Medium Enterprises in the Tourism Sector,” is jointly led by the Jordan University of Science and Technology and Specto. According to the Jordan News Agency, Petra, 89 percent of the project’s funding is provided by the European Union under the Interreg NEXT MED programme.

Ahmad Abu Haija, project manager at Specto, said the initiative brings together nine main partners and eight affiliate partners from Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey.

Over a 30-month period, ReTour aims to directly support more than 150 tourism facilities by introducing advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and smart sensors, alongside sustainable business practices.

The project was selected during the first call of the Interreg NEXT MED programme from over 600 proposals submitted by Mediterranean countries. Around 60 projects were approved, with ReTour recognised for its focus on innovation, SME empowerment, and cross-border cooperation in tourism.

Mustafa Ali, project director at the university, noted that the initiative addresses key challenges facing tourism SMEs, a critical pillar of Mediterranean economies, particularly amid disruptions such as pandemics, natural disasters, and economic instability.

The programme will establish a Mediterranean innovation platform, deploy smart digital tools, and implement structured training and advisory programmes. It aims to strengthen business continuity, enhance digital capabilities, improve visitor experiences, and promote sustainable performance across participating destinations.

ReTour is also expected to help preserve jobs, foster innovation, and support the long-term resilience and prosperity of the region’s tourism sector.
