Algeria’s telecommunications sector is entering a new phase of digital transformation as rising mobile data consumption and the rollout of 5G push operators to integrate artificial intelligence and data analytics more deeply into network management, service optimisation and customer experience.
Data from the Regulatory Authority of Post and Electronic Communications shows mobile internet subscriptions reached 55.94 million by the end of the third quarter of 2025.
More than 50 million of those connections were registered on 4G networks, while total quarterly mobile data traffic exceeded 1.63 billion gigabytes.
Mobile data consumption continues to rise
The figures highlight the growing role of mobile connectivity in Algeria’s digital economy.
Average monthly data consumption per subscriber reached 10.13 gigabytes in the third quarter of 2025, compared with 8.72 gigabytes during the same period a year earlier.
That increase places additional pressure on operators to manage network capacity more efficiently as demand for streaming, digital services, cloud applications and other data-intensive services grows.
The expansion of 5G is expected to intensify those requirements by adding more connected devices, higher traffic volumes and increasingly complex network environments.
Operators shift toward AI-driven network management
Against this backdrop, Algerian telecom operators are making AI and data analytics a more central part of their strategies.
Potential applications include automated network monitoring, predictive maintenance, resource optimisation and the personalisation of customer services and offers.
The broader objective is to move away from reactive network management toward systems that can identify emerging problems before they begin affecting subscribers.
Telecom technology expert Younes Kerrar said one of the most significant changes enabled by AI is the transition from responding to faults and congestion after they occur to anticipating them and intervening earlier.
That shift could become increasingly important as networks become more software-driven and operators manage a larger mix of 4G, 5G and Internet of Things connections.
Telecom sector strengthens links with universities
The transformation is also creating new demand for specialised skills.
Operators are investing in local talent while strengthening links with universities and research institutions, including Algeria’s National School of Artificial Intelligence.
ENSIA Director Abdelmalik Bachir said cooperation between the institution and the telecom sector is moving beyond conventional training programmes and internships.
According to Bachir, AI can be integrated across multiple areas of telecom operations, from technical management to human resources.
He stressed that the next priority is establishing longer-term partnerships between universities, companies and startups so that experimental AI projects can be converted into operational solutions deployed at scale.
Data quality becomes central to AI performance
As operators expand their use of artificial intelligence, the quality of underlying data is becoming equally important.
IT expert Yazid Akdal said the effectiveness of an AI model depends fundamentally on how well an organisation collects, structures and continuously updates its data.
That is particularly relevant in telecom networks, where AI systems may need to analyse large volumes of information related to network traffic, performance, faults and customer behaviour.
Poor-quality or fragmented data can limit the effectiveness of automated decision-making regardless of the sophistication of the AI models being used.
Privacy emerges as another strategic issue
Greater use of subscriber data also brings privacy and personal data protection into sharper focus.
Akdal stressed that customer data should only be used for the purposes for which it was collected and within the legal framework governing its use.
This creates an additional layer of complexity for operators seeking to use AI for personalisation, network optimisation and predictive analytics.
As data becomes a more valuable operational asset, telecom companies will need to balance the benefits of deeper analytics with stronger governance, security and compliance requirements.
Why this matters
Algeria’s telecom market is moving from a connectivity expansion phase toward a more intelligent network operations model.
With nearly 56 million mobile internet subscriptions and data usage continuing to rise, simply adding capacity will not be enough. Operators will increasingly need automation and predictive tools to manage performance, control costs and maintain service quality.
The expansion of 5G and IoT will make that challenge more complex. AI could help operators allocate resources dynamically, identify faults earlier and better understand changing traffic patterns, but the benefits will depend heavily on data quality, workforce capability and governance.
