iXAfrica Data Centres has launched the first phase of its NBOX1 hyperscale data centre in Nairobi, marking a significant step in the region’s digital transformation. The facility, part of a 22.5MW campus on Mombasa Road, boasts 780 racks and 4.5MW of IT capacity, optimized for AI-driven workloads.
In addition to the facility launch, iXAfrica has partnered with the Kenya Internet Exchange Point (KIXP) to establish a peering Point of Presence (PoP) at the data centre. This PoP will reduce latency and lower internet costs by localizing exchange traffic, minimizing reliance on costly international routes.
iXAfrica’s CEO, Snehar Shah, highlighted that the NBOX1 data centre will address the growing demand for cloud and AI infrastructure across East Africa. The centre is expected to support regional businesses by providing secure, scalable digital solutions that drive innovation and economic growth.
The NBOX1 facility is part of a broader expansion plan, which includes two additional data centres in Nairobi: NBOX1.2, with 18MW of IT capacity, and the 11-acre NBOX2 Tilisi campus, which will offer 53MW of capacity. At the launch event, Kenya Investment Authority (KenInvest) CEO John Mwendwa emphasized the importance of iXAfrica’s investments in boosting Kenya’s data sovereignty and positioning the country as a technology hub.
