Pakistan is undergoing a rapid transformation into a prominent global tech hub, propelled by record-breaking IT exports, policy-driven innovation, and a flourishing digital workforce. The government’s commitment to advancing digital infrastructure is helping to create a more connected, secure, and innovative future.
The Ministry of IT and Telecom is focused on establishing Pakistan as a leading digital economy by driving innovation, expanding connectivity, and ensuring universal access to telecom services.
Recent official reports highlight that these efforts are helping build a sustainable digital ecosystem, positioning Pakistan as an emerging tech leader. Over the last year, the IT and telecom sector has witnessed significant progress, fueled by governmental initiatives to promote digitalization.
Key achievements include record IT exports of $3.223 billion in FY 2023-24, marking a 24% increase. Broadband penetration rose by 5%, reaching over 139 million subscribers. Policies supporting artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and digital entrepreneurship have empowered startups and freelancers.
The Digital Economy Enhancement Project (DEEP) is enhancing digital infrastructure, driving IT exports, and improving digital skills. Pakistan has now achieved a Tier 1 ranking in the Global Cybersecurity Index and improved its position in the UN E-Government Development Index.
The introduction of e-office solutions has reduced decision-making time by 70%, streamlining governance. Innovations like the Hajj App and the One Patient One ID system have significantly boosted the efficiency of public services.
Additionally, over 600,000 individuals have been trained through DigiSkills.pk, equipping the workforce with crucial digital skills. More than 166 startups have emerged, generating over 5,000 jobs and attracting Rs260 million in investments.
Pakistan is also preparing for 5G with an upcoming spectrum auction and the National Fiberisation Policy. Broadband expansion has impacted 4.1 million people, while regulatory reforms, Wi-Fi 6E, and the National Space Policy are paving the way for next-generation connectivity.
The government has rolled out key policy frameworks to further strengthen the digital ecosystem, including Cloud First Policies adopted by provinces such as Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu Kashmir. Additionally, the National AI & Semiconductor Policies are set to accelerate Pakistan’s entry into advanced technology sectors.
