Iran and Azerbaijan have signed a strategic agreement aimed at expanding cooperation in communications and information technology. The agreement was formalized during President Masoud Pezeshkian’s official visit to Azerbaijan, with Iran’s Minister of Information Communication Technology, Sattar Hashemi, and Behzad Akbari, CEO of Telecommunication Infrastructure Company, representing Iran. Ramazan Valiyev, director of Delta-Telecom, signed on behalf of Azerbaijan.
The agreement focuses on enhancing bilateral and regional communication infrastructure, with an emphasis on data transit and submarine cable installation. Under the terms of the deal, Azerbaijan will route data traffic through Iran’s infrastructure, connecting to Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, and other neighboring countries, positioning Iran as a digital hub.
Both nations also agreed to jointly invest in infrastructure projects, including the development of submarine cables, to improve North-South and East-West communication corridors. These initiatives will strengthen Iran’s role as a key connection point between Asia and Europe.
The agreement supports Iran’s Ministry of Information Communication Technology’s goals to expand international cooperation in the IT sector and reinforce Iran’s strategic position in global communication networks, in line with its “technology diplomacy” framework.
