Morocco is preparing for a major technological leap with the launch of its 5G mobile network, set for November 2025, just ahead of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON). This rollout promises ultra-fast internet and will ignite a new era of innovation across various sectors, including healthcare, industry, agriculture, smart cities, and digital services.
The National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) has outlined its ambitious plan to provide 5G coverage to 25% of the population by the end of 2025, with plans to expand this coverage to 70% by 2030. The initial rollout will focus on key urban centers, economic zones, technology parks, and industrial areas, with a particular emphasis on universities, research centers, and critical industries like automotive and aeronautics.
The expansion is supported by a historic partnership between Maroc Telecom and Inwi, which in March 2025 established two joint ventures: FiberCo, which will roll out one million fiber optic connections over the next two years, and TowerCo, which aims to build 2,000 telecommunications towers by 2028 and 6,000 by 2033. The joint investment program is valued at 4.4 billion dirhams (approximately 440 million dollars), aimed at reducing costs and accelerating national 5G coverage through shared infrastructure.
In addition to these partnerships, Orange Morocco is exploring its own strategy to balance technological autonomy with cooperation agreements. This agreement marks a turning point in the relationship between Maroc Telecom and Inwi, which had previously been mired in legal disputes over infrastructure sharing. As part of the new understanding, previous legal penalties were reduced, signaling a new phase of collaboration in the sector.
The introduction of 5G in Morocco goes beyond faster internet speeds. It will optimize urban traffic, enhance industrial efficiency, modernize agriculture, and transform public and administrative services. International studies have shown that a 10% increase in mobile broadband penetration can drive up GDP growth by as much as 2.5%, highlighting the significant economic potential for Morocco.
The timing of the 5G launch is strategically aligned with key international sporting events, including AFCON 2025 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. By 2030, Morocco aims to achieve full 5G coverage, further establishing its position as a leader in digital innovation within the region.
By the end of 2024, Morocco had 37.44 million mobile internet users, according to ANRT data. The rollout of 5G is a crucial step in Morocco’s ‘Digital Morocco 2030’ strategy, which promotes co-investment and the shared use of infrastructure as key elements in advancing the Kingdom’s digital transformation.
