Global reports have revealed that Egypt now ranks first in Africa for average landline internet speeds, according to the Speedtest Global Internet Performance Index from June. The country also secured second place in Africa and fifth globally for the low cost of high-speed internet, with an average monthly cost of $8.31, as reported by Business Insider.
Egypt’s global ranking in average internet speeds improved significantly, jumping eight places to 71st globally, with an average speed of 80 megabits per second in June, compared to 79th place in May.
Business Insider also highlighted that Egypt ranks second in Africa for affordable high-speed internet, just behind Sudan, which holds the title of the cheapest globally. Other African nations following Egypt include Zimbabwe, the Republic of the Congo, Tunisia, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Libya, Algeria, and Nigeria.
The low cost of high-speed internet in Egypt is expected to significantly boost the national economy, enhance entrepreneurship, and support digital transformation, benefiting individuals, businesses, and the overall economy, particularly in Africa’s youthful demographic.
This achievement is attributed to the efforts of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the Egyptian Telecom Company, which have worked to improve internet service quality by upgrading infrastructure across the country and incorporating advanced technologies like fiber optics.
