Tunisie Telecom, 30 years at the heart of national and international connectivity

January 1, 1996 marked a defining moment in Tunisia’s telecommunications history with the creation of the National Telecommunications Office as a public industrial and commercial establishment, following legislation issued in April 1995. This milestone reflected a national ambition to build a future-ready operator capable of supporting technological change and firmly positioning Tunisia within the era of modern communications.

Since its establishment, Tunisie Telecom has evolved alongside major technological shifts, transitioning from traditional telephony to high-speed internet and digital services. The operator has continuously adapted its networks and offerings to meet the needs of citizens, businesses, and public institutions, playing a central role in expanding access to telecommunications nationwide.

Over the years, Tunisie Telecom has contributed significantly to reducing the digital divide by extending connectivity across all regions, including remote areas. This expansion has reinforced digital inclusion and positioned telecommunications as a driver of social and economic development.

As it approaches its 30th anniversary, Tunisie Telecom now operates key strategic infrastructure, including three submarine cables linking Tunisia to international networks, a network of certified data centres, and more than 60,000 kilometres of optical fibre spanning the country. These assets support growing demand for data, connectivity, and digital services.

Beyond infrastructure and technology, the company’s three-decade journey reflects a collective human effort. Engineers, technicians, and managers have supported each stage of transformation, ensuring continuity, modernisation, and proximity to users. Looking ahead, Tunisie Telecom aims to build on its legacy by prioritising innovation, service quality, and digital transformation, as connectivity increasingly underpins digital sovereignty and national development.
