In a significant step towards technological advancement, the Ministry of Communication and Technology of Somalia has entered into a cooperation agreement with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This landmark agreement aims to enhance the development of information and communication technologies (ICT) within Somalia.
Under the agreement, concerted efforts will be made to bolster various aspects of digital advancement, including the enhancement of ICT infrastructure, digital policy formulation, regulation, and the upskilling of digital competencies. Additionally, the partnership will focus on expanding connectivity infrastructure and fortifying the trust in digital services among the Somali population.
Jaamac Hassan Khaliif, the Minister of Communication and Technology, expressed that this partnership represents a significant reinforcement of Somalia’s relationship with the ITU. Khaliif highlighted the agreement as a pivotal moment for Somalia’s journey towards modernization and digital transformation, emphasizing the role of technology development as a cornerstone for this progress.
This cooperative effort comes on the heels of a landmark decision in December 2022, where six Somali telecommunications operators signed a voice interconnection agreement, paving the way for reduced call tariffs and increased telecommunication usage across the nation.
In alignment with actions taken by several African countries, the Somali government has imposed a ban on the social media platform TikTok and the messaging service Telegram. This move aims to curtail the dissemination of misinformation, which has become a growing concern globally.
With these strategic steps, Somalia is set on a path to integrate more deeply into the digital era, fostering growth and innovation in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
