Grameenphone Appoints Telenor Pakistan’s Håkon Høgberg as Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer

Bangladesh’s leading mobile operator Grameenphone has appointed Håkon Høgberg, currently serving at Telenor Pakistan, as its new Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer (CSTO), reinforcing the company’s focus on digital transformation, operational modernization, and long-term growth.

The appointment comes as telecommunications operators across Asia increasingly prioritize business transformation initiatives to adapt to changing market dynamics, evolving customer expectations, and growing competition from digital service providers.

Høgberg brings extensive experience from within the Telenor Group, where he has held leadership positions focused on strategy, business development, and transformation. His appointment is expected to support Grameenphone’s efforts to strengthen its market position while accelerating innovation and expanding digital service capabilities.

As Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer, he will be responsible for driving the company’s strategic priorities, overseeing transformation initiatives, and supporting the development of new business opportunities beyond traditional telecommunications services.

Grameenphone, a subsidiary of Norway-based Telenor Group, remains Bangladesh’s largest mobile operator and plays a central role in the country’s digital ecosystem. The company serves millions of subscribers through mobile connectivity, digital services, enterprise solutions, and emerging technology offerings.

The telecommunications sector in Bangladesh is undergoing significant change as operators seek new revenue streams amid slowing growth in traditional voice services. Companies are increasingly investing in digital platforms, fintech services, enterprise solutions, cloud offerings, and customer experience improvements to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving market.

Leadership appointments focused on strategy and transformation have become increasingly important as telecom operators transition from connectivity providers to broader digital service enablers. Industry observers note that successful transformation requires balancing operational efficiency, technology modernization, regulatory compliance, and innovation-driven growth.

The appointment also reflects Telenor Group’s continued emphasis on leadership mobility across its operating companies, allowing expertise and best practices to be shared across different markets.

As Bangladesh’s digital economy continues to expand, Grameenphone is expected to play a key role in supporting connectivity, digital inclusion, enterprise digitalization, and the adoption of next-generation technologies.

Editor’s Note

This appointment reflects a broader trend reshaping the global telecommunications industry: transformation has become a boardroom priority rather than a technology initiative. Telecom operators are increasingly appointing senior executives dedicated specifically to strategy and transformation as they navigate the shift from traditional connectivity businesses toward digital ecosystems. For Grameenphone, the challenge is not simply growing subscriber numbers but identifying new sources of value in areas such as digital services, enterprise solutions, fintech, and data-driven customer experiences. The movement of senior talent within the Telenor Group also highlights the growing importance of cross-market expertise as operators seek proven leadership capable of managing complex transformation programs in increasingly competitive digital markets.
