Egypt’s ICT Sector Sees $2 Billion Investment and Major Growth in Digital Infrastructure

Egypt’s mobile phone companies have invested $2 billion in the country over the past three years, focusing on the development and expansion of frequency spectrums, announced Amr Talaat, the Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology, at a press conference during Cairo ICT.

The communications and information technology sector in Egypt has experienced remarkable growth, with an annual growth rate exceeding 16% for five consecutive years, making it the fastest-growing sector in the country. The sector’s contribution to Egypt’s GDP has risen significantly, reaching approximately 5.8%, up from 3.2% in 2014.

Egypt now holds the top spot in Africa for fixed internet speed, with an impressive average of 76.4 Mbps. Additionally, the country has made notable strides in artificial intelligence, advancing 49 places in the government readiness index for AI, improving its ranking from 111th in 2019 to 62nd in 2023.

Egypt has also made significant progress in digital transformation, moving up in the government readiness index from Group C in 2018 to Group A in 2023, after being ranked in Group B in 2020. These advancements highlight the country’s commitment to boosting its digital infrastructure and positioning itself as a leader in the region.
