SpaceX in Talks to Bring Starlink Satellite Internet Services to Iraq

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has held discussions with officials from US-based SpaceX on the remaining regulatory steps required to allow its subsidiary, Starlink, to launch satellite internet services in Iraq. The talks, held in Baghdad, focused on issuing the necessary permits to enable commercial operations.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, al-Sudani reaffirmed the Iraqi government’s commitment to advancing information technology and digital transformation by partnering with global technology companies. He noted that Iraq has made significant progress in attracting international firms and addressing their operational requirements, creating a more favorable investment environment.

The prime minister also emphasized that while Iraq is open to foreign technology investment, it remains committed to safeguarding national sovereignty in the information technology sector. SpaceX representatives expressed strong interest in entering the Iraqi market and confirmed their readiness to begin delivering satellite internet services once regulatory approval is granted.

The discussions align with Iraq’s broader push to accelerate digital transformation. Earlier this year, al-Sudani encouraged major international technology companies, particularly from the United States, to operate in Iraq and collaborate with the local private sector as part of the country’s modernization agenda.
