The Sri Lankan government plans to transition from analogue to digital TV in a move aimed at freeing up valuable spectrum space for the launch of 5G. Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne, highlighted that analogue television occupies spectrum equivalent to 26 channels, and switching to digital TV will reduce this usage, making room for faster mobile communication.
In addition to the transition, the government is investing in the construction of 276 new towers as part of a project led by the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission to enhance mobile broadband connectivity. This initiative is crucial to Sri Lanka’s goal of expanding its digital economy to US$15 billion.
Weeraratne also noted the proposal to establish a Digital Economy Authority, which will oversee digitalization efforts across various ministries. While digital TV is expected to increase efficiency, television remains one of Sri Lanka’s most popular mass communication platforms, serving as a key source of public information.
This strategic move toward digital TV and enhanced mobile connectivity is pivotal for advancing the country’s digital transformation and improving access to 5G services.
