Sri Lanka is set to implement mobile number portability (MNP) starting June 2025, allowing users to retain their mobile phone numbers when switching network operators. This decision was discussed during a Ministerial Consultative Committee on Digital Economic Affairs meeting held in Parliament, chaired by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Number portability enables subscribers to change their mobile network operator while keeping the same phone number, enhancing competition in the market. While there have been discussions around introducing number portability for years, this marks the first concrete step toward its implementation. The move is expected to foster greater competition in Sri Lanka’s telecommunications sector, benefiting consumers and potentially impacting larger players.
