China Mobile Pakistan (CMPak), operating under the Zong 4G brand, has announced significant network expansion and modernization efforts for the first half of 2024. The company deployed over 400 new 4G sites, enhancing its coverage and capacity across Pakistan.
In a release on Saturday, Zong 4G stated that it completed an extensive network modernization project, replacing the older 2T2R technology on its base stations with advanced 8T8R technology. This upgrade was specifically aimed at improving the customer experience for remote projects along the three routes of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a crucial component of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Furthermore, Zong completed over 1,400 battery upgrades to its base stations in the first half of 2024. The older battery banks were replaced with Li-Ion solutions, which offer longer battery life and quicker charging times, enhancing the network’s reliability and efficiency.
“We remain committed to providing exceptional service to our customers and driving the growth of Pakistan’s telecommunications infrastructure,” said Zong CTO Lu Jianhui in a statement. “We appreciate the continued support from our partners, Huawei and ZTE, as we advance towards a more connected future.”
Zong is Pakistan’s second-largest mobile network, with 49 million subscribers, following Veon-owned Jazz, which had 71.4 million subscribers as of May 2024. However, this ranking may change with the proposed merger of Pakistan Telecommunication Company’s U Fone and Telenor Pakistan, currently under antitrust scrutiny. If approved, the combined entity would become the second-largest network with just over 70 million subscribers.
